"If I were to wish for anything I should not wish for wealth and power, but for the passionate sense of what can be, for the eye, which, ever young and ardent, sees the possible. Pleasure disappoints, possibility never. And what wine is so sparkling, what so fragrant, what so intoxicating

as possibility?"

                                   -- Soren Kierkegaard

Artist Rick Fleury says of his work:

"I'm reaching for the spiritual experience of the landscape.

The landscape in its purest form -- of simplicity and complexity,

as it is, and as it was, undisturbed and uninterrupted by man."

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Current

"As my direction in painting continues to change, I find myself drawn ever closer to the structure and simplicity of the landscape.

I continue to look to simplify my approach -- both in what I see, and what I choose to capture in paint -- while at the same time, reach for more complex challenges in terms of scale and composition, content and emotion."

                                                                                                          2005 -2006

"My aim in painting has always been to capture the most exact interpretation of a moment in time, so that that moment may be revisited over and over again.

I am not drawn to the abstraction of such moments as much as I am to capturing the essense of their beauty through the gesture of a brushstroke: the rare light as it moves across a meadow, or the shadows or reflections it leaves behind; the subtle variations of color as they change with the seasons or time of day; the movement of grasses or sands as they move with the forces of nature or man; the solitude of a wandering low tide or a sun setting for what seems to be a last time.

I find, in working, between watercolor and oil, last year and this, yesterday, today and tomorrow, I am constantly looking to simplify this interpretation.

For, it is in the simplest of gestures

that the truest points can be made."
